Safety and Rulebook Orange Crate Derby

A safety inspection of all cars will take place before the Orange Crate Derby begins. All participants must wear a full-face helmet with chin strap. All wheels should be secured with castellated nuts and/or cotter pins. Also, the car must have some type of brake to slow it down; a foot brake is required. A parent or guardian must be present during inspection.

Prizes will be awarded to ALL PARTICIPANTS. A trophy will be awarded to first and second place winners in each class.

Safety note:

Broad Street will be lined with bales of hay. All spectators and non-participants MUST stay off the street and behind the hay bales. THE RACE WILL BE STOPPED UNTIL THIS REQUIREMENT IS COMPLIED WITH.

The Washington Police and Emergency Squad will be present in case their services are needed.

Trophy winners are invited to participate in the parade. Other cars may participate if there is room on the truck.

Car numbers will be awarded on a "first come, first serve" basis. Please register early!

CAR SPECIFICATIONS:

  1. Cars no wider than 45" and no longer than 80".

  2. Cars must have 4 wheels, no larger than 10".

  3. No pneumatic tires.

  4. Axle length must be a minimum width of 30".

  5. All cars must have a working foot brake. Cars that have previously raced are waived, unless they have been altered. Newly built cars must have the Soap Box Derby steering and braking assembly which can be ordered at Soap Box Derby website. Complete parts list attached*

  6. Car frame must have sufficient blocking with maximum of 2" deflection to prevent full turning of front axle. The car must have full floors.

  7. 4-point harness will be mandatory and will be provided.

  8. Steering must follow the guidelines of the Soap Box Derby specified below.

  9. Major portion of car must be built from wood.

  10. All cars must have car numbers in 3 locations (sides and front) and be at least 10" high.

  11. Cockpit area should have padding with foam rubber to prevent injury. Pipe insulation is recommended.

  12. All added weight must be secured.

  13. Inspection will be on Saturday, June 15" at 10am behind the Warren Hills Memorial Home located at 234 W. Washington Ave. It is mandatory for new cars and drivers.

DRIVER SPECIFICATION:

  1. The event is open to all drivers 7-14 years of age (on July 4, 2024).

  2. All drivers must have a full-face helmet with a chin strap; no bicycle or open-faced helmets are permitted.
    NO EXCEPTIONS.

  3. Drivers should wear elbow pads.

RACE RULES:

  1. Crates must coast down the hill. Nothing other than lubricant can be used to accelerate the crate.

  2. Cars must be brought to the starting ramps when called. A grace period may be granted for repairs if official is notified promptly.

  3. If any car crosses the center line during the race, that car will lose the race. In the event that both cars cross the center line, the first car to cross the center line loses and the other car declared the winner.

  4. After each race, cars will be moved to a holding area on Monroe Street. Cars will remain there until all cars have raced. Pit crews should wait at the bottom with their cars, ready to go when called. Then all cars will come back up the hill at the same time.

  5. All repairs must be made at the race; be prepared with spare parts and appropriate tools.

  6. Cars must participate in each heat to be eligible for trophies.

  7. Any sign of unsportsmanlike conduct by driver, pit crew, or parent will result in immediate and permanent disqualification.

  8. The winner of a race is established when the nose of the car crosses the finish line.
